Why is it that people hate lawyers but then watch them on prime time television?

Seriously, I don’t get it. People blame lawyers for all of society’s problems these days, then go home and watch the latest episode of “Law and Order”. It doesn’t make sense.

And yes, those “debt relief” commercials drive me and my parents (both of whom are lawyers) up the walls for disgracing a noble profession.

The Law and Order shows depict prosscutors who are the “good” kind of lawyer trying to put the “bad guys” in jail rather than the kind that lie and manipulate to get their clients out of jail.

The lawyers on law and order are good and some real lawyers are just in it for the money and will sue for anything.
My dad’s a lawyer and I never understood why people hated his proffession until I told my friend and then she spent every 5 minutes saying “Don’t sue me!” And she was dead serious.

Just like there are all types of people, there are all types of lawyers (as you should know since that is the profession of both your parents). There are sleezeballs out there and there are the good guys. And I really don’t hear people blaming lawyers for all of society’s problems these days. Each person polled will assign blame differently. Given that fact that both of your parents are attorneys, one would think you should know better about generalizations. Ahh…but there I just went and generalized, believing all children of attorneys are intelligent.

For some reason, lawyers have been given a bad name. Several different organizations go out of their way to blame attorney’s for specific ills — such as insurance companies who blame lawyers for increases in medical costs due to malpractice cases.
Also, people blame lawyers who represent criminals for the criminals getting off the hook — I don’t know of very many lawyers who want the guilty to go free — they just want the innocent to not be harassed and the only way that happens is to hold the police/prosecuters to a high standard.
My experience with lawyers has been that most are honest, hard working people just like you and me. There are a few bad apples out there who are money driven and don’t care — and they give people a bad name.

Well for starters TV is entertainment, not reality. In real life it’s never good to see a lawyer and usually expensive. And bless em we got, or so I’ve read, 70% of all the worlds lawyers in our borders. Is it any surprise that you see them chasing ambalances. Of course we have over 30% of the shrinks so no wonder we’re all crazy to boot.

Beats me. I absolutely LOATH lawyer shows. I’ve not liked a single one I’ve ever subjected myself to.

It’s like a train wreck or auto accident. You know they are bad, and no one wants one to happen, but if you are there, you look to see if you see something. . .

Well, I think you might not have thought this through completely.
If you do debt relief law, television advertising is a good way to get more clients, and there’s nothing wrong with it or even disgraceful about it. It’s advertising a service. I don’t know why you or anyone else would be more offended at that than at any other commercial.
On the other hand, “Law & Order” and other lawyer shows are — hello? Entertainment. I love the show as much as the next guy, but it’s not how the law really works, and if anything is disgraceful — just playing devil’s advocate here — it’s people thinking that this is how the law really works. I am a paralegal, and I can’t tell you how many people think that their case will be resolved in a few weeks (or even less) because of the neat way every case is resolved and the bad guy is put away in a nice hour-long block.
I also disagree that “people blame lawyers for all of society’s problems.” There are lawyers who really do a lot of good, and help people who need it and otherwise would have their rights violated. Just like in any profession, there are people who make it look bad. Don’t jump to conclusions and rant about assumptions and half-truths.
