What if I cannot pay credit card debt because I have medical expenses?

jim g asked:

The debt is not huge but the shares are more than I can afford. If you pay less, you may also throw my money away as it does not reduce the debt but just keep down a small amount of interest (not much). I still get fees, etc.. There can also be paid nothing and use the money for necessary expenses. I am thinking to let them sue as I feel I have a better chance in court that the company given my medical costs unavoidable.

What is the fastest way to get rid of student loan debt?

Friday, March 27th, 2009
Ubiquitous asked:

I’m paying off a lot of credit card debt and currently have my student loans in a deferral status. But the big monthly payments will start up again at the end of this year.

Aside from trying to “drop off the radar screen” or looking for a much better-paying job that would quickly burn me out, I’m curious if anybody has any leads on this matter.

Thanks!

PS: Don’t recommend declaring bankruptcy because student loan debt is exempt from that.

Who is responsible for credit card debt if somebody dies? Or does the company eat it?

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009
Brad asked:

Say somebody has X amount of credit card debt, then they die but still have that debt to the credit card company outstanding, what happens? Does the company have to write it off as bad debt or ? Perhaps the company can hit up that person’s estate. But let me pose another question then - what if that person’s estate does not have enough money to cover that credit card debt.

I’m not talking about those debt consolidation programs, where they settle your debt and you make payments to them. That actually adversely affects your credit. But what other ways are there?

What is the longest you should hold credit card debt for?

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009
Brad M asked:

I currently have around $3,200 in credit card debt, which is a large yet manageable amount. I want to pay this debt off slowly. What is a good timeframe to completely pay off my balance? Is a year or two a good goal or should I be more aggressive?

I know it depends on what I want to do, but I am not sure if having large amounts over time is a bad thing over than the obvious interest accruing.
